Dallas International School complies with all federal, state, and local laws regulating data privacy and protection of personal information. The federal student privacy laws that regulate privacy and protect sensitive data when DIS issues devices or use educational software that are known to be FERPA, COPPA, and CIPA compliant.
FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act , protects the privacy of student education records. The US Department of Education defines FERPA as federal legislation that allows parents the right to access their child’s education record, the right to have the education record amended, the right to have some control over the disclosure of their child’s personally identifiable information (PII) from the education record, and is designed to protect personal privacy. In accordance with FERPA, DIS maintains student records with cloud-based vendors with whom we have a direct business relationship, who in turn are FERPA compliant.
COPPA, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act , addresses data protection regulations for children 12 years of age or under. COPPA applies to online services, commercial websites and mobile applications that, knowingly or unknowingly, collect information from children. Enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), COPPA prohibits unfair and/or deceptive practices in connection with the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information online from children.. In accordance with COPPA, DIS does not knowingly or unknowingly, collect any personal data from children who are 12 years old and under.
Furthermore, all cloud-based vendors with whom we have a direct business relationship, are COPPA compliant.
CIPA, the Children’s Internet Protection Act , is governed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). CIPA addresses children's access to obscene or harmful content over the Internet. DIS implements technology protection measures to ensure safe Internet usage which include, but is not limited to, content filtering, firewall, device management, and regulated access to campus network resources over wired or wireless connections operated by the school.
