Throughout the academic year, the students at the Lower Campus work with Ms. Kelley Loyd in the Counseling Office on the DIS Core Values: Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Empathy, and Resilience.
Students recently had the opportunity to learn more about EMPATHY through the book Whoever You Are by Mem Fox.
During the guidance lessons for grades GS through CM1, each student heard the story and created a paper heart that expressed what they learned. Their amazing works of art were displayed proudly in the lobby of the Lower Campus!
The lessons are created to introduce or exercise what they know about the core value in a developmentally appropriate way. CE2 students watched a video and discussed not judging people immediately but understanding that everyone is different and may be going through situations unlike our own.
CM1 classes considered the differences between sympathy and empathy based on the following poem by Rebecca O'Donnell.
Working in small groups, each set of students were to explain their opinions. The students were challenged further to relate what RESPECT, which was the core value covered in December, had to do with EMPATHY. Camden Nugent did an outstanding job relating these values and shared her wisdom.
Much appreciation and credit is given to the teachers, staff, and parents who model the core values for our students. Thank you for all that you do!
