Dr. Josep González Welcomes a Refugee Family

Dr. Josep González, Head of Dallas International School, personally greeted a refugee family at the DFW International Airport yesterday, after their escape from Afghanistan. The father, Mohammad Afzal Afzali, worked for a U.S. Embassy-funded organization in Afghanistan and helped translate interviews at public conferences and seminars.

The School’s leadership team, backed by the Board of Directors, has taken a proactive stance to offer an immersion education to the children of the Afzali family as they begin their life anew in Dallas, Texas. Dallas International School prides itself on its citizenship programming, which aims to show students that education is not just about academic excellence, however crucial this is, but also about becoming a good citizen. Dr. Josep González says, “If we want our children to show leadership and good citizenship, we must lead by example.”

Dallas International School (DIS) is a premier private school and the only international school in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metropolitan area. DIS serves students from preschool through 12th grade and introduces them to a global perspective through a unique multilingual and multicultural academic program, which includes the international curriculum of France’s Ministry of Education and the International Baccalaureate. The school teaches an advanced curriculum while giving students the advantage of acquiring French, Spanish, English, Mandarin, and a range of cultural viewpoints.

Board President of Dallas International School, Tammy Cotton Hartnett, says, "I’m confident our caring international community will be there as they settle into their new home in Dallas. We will receive the Afzali family with gratitude for their help at the U.S. Embassy and empathy with their long journey for peace and stability, which is just beginning."
